Always mesmerized by wildlife and anything related to nature, Mel was born in Manhattan and moved to Miami Beach while still an infant.
"Remember mom always telling us to go out and play. While all the kids went to the playground, I'd walk to the beach . Experimenting with making paint by squooshing berries, plants and clays. I'd paint on huge rocks and the subjects were always animals". Not long after that winning first place at a school competition.
Painting in oils, the intensity of the colors and the long workability are a perfect fit. Working at creating a world in every painting, the canvasses are multi-layered with texture added for extra dimension and each piece having it's own story to tell. Gallery wrapped, these works are made with a continuation of the image painted on the sides making framing unnecessary.
Lately, interplaying the beloved wildlife with abstraction, giving the work a looser feel, not to mention bringing out all the colors of the rainbow. Catch a rainbow...
